Comments: We are glad to welcome the 5 new toddlers who joined us today. Our super duper kids have been chanting all the shlokas so well that we introduced a new one today. We learnt 'सर्वोपनिषदो गावो - sarvopaniShado gaavo', which is a verse from the 'geeta dhyaanam'. In bhagavadgeeta, we started learning the 5th and the final verse (for our toddler class), for the May 2nd presentation. Most of the kids are comfortable with the first 4 verses now. We will perfect the 5th too, by the big day, which brings us to the parents! Parents, do register your children at the earliest. We are aware that we have been bombarding you with this topic time and again, but for a good reason. No, it is not just the ice-cream party :), but the very fact that they are all doing so well. It would be a nice to see them all do the same at the ashram. Seeing the older kids will be encouraging for them. And more so, to instill the love of learning bhagavadgeeta, which will stay with them for a long long time to come.

We did the story of a little parrot, who was advised by a sadhu to beware of the hunter. The parrot, being a parrot :), repeated after him 'beware of the hunter'. It would repeat that sentence time and again. The sadhu thought that the parrot had learnt his lesson. Once when a hunter came to the forest and spread a net, the parrot repeated 'beware of the hunter'. Soon after he finished saying that, he went and sat in the net and got caught by the hunter. Sitting in the cage, he promptly repeated 'beware of the hunter'! Because, he had only learnt to repeat the sentence, without ever thinking about the meaning of behind it. Although he repeated it repeatedly, he did the exact opposite! From this, we learnt that it is not enough to just know about stuff, but we have understand and apply the knowledge practically. The children totally got the purpose of the story (see snippets)!

The children were so enthusiastic today that, after snack time, they came upfront and got ready for the sanskrit segment! We had to shuffle around our art segment and finish our sanskrit learning first. We had done the vowels of the sanskrit alphabet before. Today, we introduced the first ten consonants of the varNamaala (alphabet) too. Sanskrit numbers, they are a perfect 10 in saying 1-10 :). We reviewed shapes and colors, which they are very comfortable. Singing our sanskrit version of 'head, shoulders, knees and toes...' was fun too.

We saw beautiful lines when the children traced on the laminated 'om' cards. We have some very deft hands here. It was a joy seeing them write so intently.

They enjoyed taking deep breaths and doing all the yoga poses. It was fun seeing them try to keep their balance while doing the ekapadaasana :).

We see some of kids running around in the class. Parents, please be reminded to not let your children do that. They can get badly hurt if they slip and fall. Also, if one of them starts running, it magnetically attracts the rest of the bunch and distracts from the curriculum.

We will not be meeting for the next 2 Sundays. We will meet again on April 11th. Feel free to leave your comments and suggestions at the feedback link provided above (in the announcements). The link is valid until April 7th.

Enjoy your spring break everyone.

Snippets: After the story, aunty said - 'I will keep saying - eat the food, eat the food - but just sit in front of the plate, or, I will say - don't run on the street, don't run on the street - even as I am running across the street, can I?' The kids laugh hysterically and say, 'No you can't. That doesn't work!' - Isn't it as simple as that!!

Comments: We had a small class today, thanks to the 3 day rain storm and power outages. We truly appreciate those that came to balavihar despite the bad weather, inclusive of a hail storm! We did our regular prayers, bhajans and geeta chanting. The kids are ready to start the 5th geeta shloka in the upcoming class! That is so impressive. Parents, please be reminded to register your children online. It will take only 2-3 minutes of your time, plus, we have a pretty good chance of winning the ice-cream party too! We are one of the biggest classes at balavihar and we have won this party in the past. Let's do it this year too!!

The story today was about the गजेन्द्र (gajendra - king of elephants) whose foot was caught by a मकरः (makaraH -crocodile) and was rescued by shrIman naaraayaNa Himself. As an extension of the story, we made a paper plate elephant who had no trunk! But guess what, it had no trunk because the hand of the children would serve as the trunk for the elephant!! We needed a working trunk to offer the lotus to Lord Vishnu, so what better than the little hands of our toddlers themselves :).

Snippets: During the bhajans, aunty said that the next one is for both Lord Krishna and Rama together. Our toddler says, 'Ravana is a bad guy, we will not sing song for him!' Obviously! Who sings the glories of the bad guys!! Simple words, great thoughts - that is what we get from our toddlers.

  • ॐ जय जगदीश हरे - Om jaya jagedeesha hare (My prayers, pg. 22).
  • ॐ पूर्णमदः - Om poornamadaH.

Comments: Our classes are going on in full swing, as if in the spirit of welcoming the spring! Oooh, that sound like poetry :). Since today was the first open house for some of the older siblings, parents had to head out after snack time. We had to make a few adjustments to our schedule in lieu of that. We finished all our prayers. We see that many of the children are reciting along with us, without having to be led. That is so awesome! We had to cut short our time for the bhajans. Hence did a few of the ones we do regularly. I know, most of you are disappointed if we don't do 'subrahmaNyam...' (That's my favorite too!) But guess what, keep practicing at home and we will sing it at balavihar soon :).

Geeta chanting is coming along beautifully. It is such a pleasure to hear them. As the weeks are going by, we see more kids chanting more confidently. Parents, can't emphasis enough about making your registrations online. At the risk of sounding repeative, we remind you again to register your children, without fail! Guess what we forgot to tell you in class... The class with the highest number of registrants wins an ice-cream party with Swamiji. Let's make sure we come in large enough numbers to bag that prize :)

In the story time, we heard the story of the '3 little fish' - Timsi, Bucki and Moti. We learnt that Timsi was a very alert and wise fish. Bucki was a procrastinator, but would do his jobs eventually. Whereas Moti, was totally lazy and did not care to do more than..., well..., lazing around! When a fisherman comes, Moti gets almost caught but escapes with the help of his 2 friends. Then Buckie and Moti both learn the importance of alertness, punctuality and wisdom. They promised to never procrastinate their jobs ever again. In honor of that very valuable lesson, we all made a 'Paper Plate Clock' with paint, etc. Some friends whose siblings had open houses took the project home, as they had to leave early.

We then did the sanskrit segment, bursting into laughs again for the alphabet अः (aH). They find it very funny :).

We did our yoga time and added a new aasana called 'uShTraasana', meaning 'the camel pose'. We did the kids version of it, as the true uShTraasana can be challenging :)

Enjoy the warm weather everyone and see you next week at Balavihar.

Snippets: During yoga time, to sit in vajraasana, the instruction was 'sit on the knees'. One of our toddlers starts looking for his mommy's knees! Then we had to correct the instruction and say 'find and sit on your own knees' :).
